Love and Respect - Key ingredients in the Great Commission

Jesus calls us to go and make disciples of all nations, not converts.

Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

It seems that we are more eager to make converts (say this prayer, sign this card, walk to the front of the church, etc). Disciple making requires relationship. Relationships require time. Why should someone want to know what I believe and why I believe it if they don't know me. Why should I expect them to care if they don't know and respect me. Respect is something that is earned through showing respect.

Peter said "in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect" 1 Peter 3:15

Notice, gentleness and respect.

John says "let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:18

We can say that we love, but if there is no action to it, then it doesn't count.

It's my hope that I can love and respect people in such a way that they would see Jesus in me and want to know more about The Way, The Truth and The Life.
